The Top Coaches are at a loss to really explain how long irons can be relentlessly fired into greens to within feet of the flag. They are clueless! In order to sidestep this elephant in the room, they usually invoke other causes either as a gift from God as many American “bible belt” Pro’s do or pass it off as either genetic or super special DNA at work. These intellectually lightweight coaches some of whom are former golf stars turned commentators regularly spew out statements like “Boy he’s blessed with natural talent” over the networks when some player hits a great shot. Citing God is the easy way to fill the gap in people’s knowledge and intelligence and it is an utterly lamentable cop out by these so-called swing coach experts! It is the ultimate in intellectual laziness. Meanwhile, the viewer listening to this claptrap gives up all hope of ever improving because this facile conclusion as to why those that can’t do it and them that can do it tells him things will never change. “They can do it because they are NATURAL’S but you can’t because you’re NOT.”

So according to these mental sloths, you either have it or you don’t and if you don’t have it - tough!

These people never really ever look at the real dynamics behind high level golf because they don’t have to! The players they are dealing with day in day out have the essential piece of the puzzle already in place. They witness great golf every day and are happy to conclude it is only available to a certain small few. They analyse on their monitors by drawing lines and highlighting swing positions, they have all the fancy rhetoric and the fancy big words and just like politicians, it all amounts to nothing more than hot air devoid of content.

It is quite easy teaching players who can already play; the real hard challenge is teaching those that can’t but never forget that a coach can only teach you how to swing a golf club, he can never ever teach you how to hit a golf ball. You have to learn that using what is at the start a contrived strange swing that feels initially unfit for purpose.

The “magic only occurs when you can perform the correct technique without thinking. If the technique remains an analytical “swing by numbers” production which is usually the result of the standardized coaching approach, the magic resides in the wings waiting patiently for you to get out the way so it can take over because yes, you also have the magic and it lies quite literally in your HANDS!
